Georgia Commercial Trucking Requirements
The Georgia Department of Public Safety’s Motor Carrier Compliance (MCCD) is the governing body for commercial vehicles with a GVWR of 10,000 and more. They require $100,000 per person bodily injury, $300,000 per accident and $50,000 in property damage. This limit can be expressed in one coverage limit of $350,000 in Combined Single Limit (CSL).
Along with the required liability limit some truckers will be required to file a Form E, which is handled by the insurance company. The Form E is updated nightly if the status of the insurance changes. For example, if you fail to pay the premium payment and the policy cancels then the insurance company is required to revoke the filing and the truck must remain parked until the insurance is back in force.
It is important to realize that this liability coverage limit is for intrastate hauling only, which means you don’t cross state lines. If you cross state lines then you are governed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and they require $750,000 CSL along with a Motor Carrier (MC) number that must show Active.
How Much Does Trucking Insurance Cost in Georgia?
There are a lot of factors that insurance companies use to determine rate. Below is a breakdown based on 2+ years CDL, liability only, and a radius of 500 miles or less.
General Freight hauler GVW 48,000lbs+ - $16,000 - $19,000
Box Truck less than 48,000lbs - $8,000 - $13,000
💡Caleb’s Pro Tip - Before getting a quote let our team analyze how you filed for your DOT#. This is a Free service offered by our team that can lead to thousands of dollars in savings. A large rating factor is based on your DOT# including needing or not needing an MC Number, Cargo carried and Out-of-Service. In many cases we have saved our clients thousands by updating the DOT to reflect the proper information.

Frequently Asked Questions
My buddy is insured through you and we are basically the same age and hauling the same goods. Why is my price higher?
The more common questions we hear after 17+ years of doing commercial trucking insurance. The one factor that many people miss or have never heard of is the credit score. Yes, insurance companies use your credit score to help determine rate. Someone with a 700+ credit score will pay less than someone with a credit score in the five hundreds.
Do we do Reefer Breakdown?
Yes - Reefer breakdown is not covered under the standard policy, but we can write a policy with reefer breakdown included.
Do you insure Bobtail?
Yes, but most likely you are looking for Non-Trucking Insurance. Almost the same thing, but policy coverage is different. Most people who think they have Bobtail Insurance really have Non-Trucking Insurance.
Can the policy be put on a monthly payment plan?
Yes, most policies will come with a 16.7% - 20% down with 10 equal payments.
What is the difference between intrastate and interstate?
Intrastate is hauling within the state borders. Intrastate trucking is governed by the state that you are doing business in and you are required to follow their liability insurance laws. Interstate is when you cross state lines and you now are governed by the FMCSA.
