Here's what surprises most Georgia hotshots: your dually and gooseneck put you under the same state rulebook as the big trucks. Georgia doesn't draw its line where the CDL does — it draws it at 10,000 pounds, and almost every hotshot combination is over it. We write hotshot operations every week, and in Georgia the conversation comes down to three key factors.

Key Factor #1: Georgia's Line Is 10,000 lbs — and You're Over It

Run for hire inside Georgia in a commercial vehicle over 10,000 lbs — which a hotshot combination almost always is — and you're a GIMC-registered carrier under the Georgia Department of Public Safety with minimum liability of $100,000 per person / $300,000 per accident bodily injury and $50,000 property damage (Source: Ga. Comp. R. & Regs. 570-38-2-.05). Your insurer proves it to the state with a Form E filing — and the filing is the part that parks trucks: it has to stay continuous, insurers must give the state at least 30 days' notice before cancellation, and a lapsed filing can suspend your registration while your trailer sits loaded.

Key Factor #2: Cross the Line Once and the Number Changes

Take one load to Chattanooga, Jacksonville, or Dothan for hire in a combination over 10,001 lbs, and the federal rulebook takes over: USDOT number, MC authority, and $750,000 minimum auto liability for most freight (49 CFR § 387.9) — with your authority inactive until your insurer files proof with the FMCSA. The authority, the filings, and the limits all change at the border. Tell us how you actually run, including the occasional out-of-state load, and we'll build to the rulebook that really governs you.

Key Factor #3: The Floor Keeps You Legal — the Contract Gets You Loaded

Brokers and shippers commonly require $1,000,000 in auto liability and $100,000 in cargo regardless of what Georgia requires (although that can vary by contract) — and hotshot cargo that changes by the load has to be disclosed and classed correctly, whether it's pipe, equipment, or vehicles. Send us the requirement sheet before you sign it; we'll read it against your policy.

What Does Georgia Hotshot Insurance Cost?

We estimate between $8,000 – $20,000+ per year. Figures reflect our book as of November 2026.

The spread comes from your limits, cargo, radius, record, and time in business.

To quote you we'll need: truck and trailer details and values as equipped, driver list with license info, radius, what you haul, and your USDOT/MC numbers if you have them. Request your quote below.

Frequently Asked Questions

What insurance does Georgia require for hotshot trucking?

For-hire commercial vehicles over 10,000 lbs running intrastate need GIMC registration through the Georgia DPS, minimum liability of $100,000/$300,000 bodily injury and $50,000 property damage, and a continuous Form E filing. Your freight category and how you run can add requirements — send us yours.

Do I need a CDL for hotshot in Georgia?

Generally not under 26,001 lbs gross combined weight rating — but the state's 10,000-lb insurance line and the CDL line are different rules, and most hotshots are over the first one.

What happens if my policy cancels mid-term?

Your insurer's Form E filing is withdrawn — the rule requires at least 30 days' notice to the state — and Georgia can suspend your registration until new proof is filed. Continuous coverage is the registration itself.
