Wisconsin Dealership Insurance Requirements

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation, Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) requires all dealerships to maintain the following insurance requirements.

Surety Bond

  • $50,000 bond for new and used auto sales
  • $25,000 bond for wholesale, salvage and recreational vehicles (such as ATVs)
  • $5,000 bond for moped

In addition to the bond requirements all dealerships in Wisconsin must have insurance limits at $25,000 Bodily Injury per person, $50,000 Bodily Injury per accident and $10,000 in Property Damage. Insurance companies will combine these limits into one limit referred to as Combined Single Limit (CSL) at $85,000.

Garage Liability Insurance

The majority of dealerships will be written on a type of policy called Garage Liability. Garage Liability is a specific policy form that is designed for Dealerships and Repair Shops. A normal General Liability policy has exclusions to auto whereas the Garage Liability is designed to provide liability coverage to autos.

For example, you are test driving a vehicle and get into an at-fault accident. Any damages done  for property damage and bodily injury would be covered up to policy limits. It is important to note that this coverage is liability to others. It does not cover damages done to dealership inventory.

Dealer Open Lot

In the example above we mentioned getting into an at-fault accident and pointed out that a dealership vehicle would not be covered for repairs in the event of an accident. If you had Dealer Open Lot, also referred to as Dealer Physical Damage then the vehicle would be covered for repairs minus any deductible.

Dealer Open Lot provides coverage for accidents, theft and weather related claims.

How much does Dealership Insurance Cost?

There are hundreds of factors that determine what the rate will be for your dealership insurance. Factors include ages of employees, zip code and coverage options, just to name a few, but the starting base rate for a single owner business will be $1,200 plus fees and taxes.

Rates will increase as the size and coverage options chosen increase.

Other Coverage Options

  • Garage Keepers - Provides coverage for non-owned vehicles. Garage Keepers is typically added to the policy if you are doing repair or servicing to customer vehicles.
  • Uninsured Motorist - Adds additional medical
  • Furnished Autos - Furnished Auto is added when you want to drive the dealership inventory for your business and personal use.
  • Commercial Auto
  • Commercial Property
  • Workers Compensation
  • Cyber Liability
