Turkey Fryer Safety Tips
Turkey Fryer Safety Tips
Like many other Americans, this Thanksgiving our family will be deep frying our turkey. A time-honored tradition at the Barbee household. It is important to remember safety. According to the National Fire Protection Association, every year deep-fryer fires are responsible for more than $15 Million in property damage, 60 injuries and five (5) deaths each year. Please follow these safety tips this holiday season.
Turkey Fire Safety Tips
- Always fry your turkey outdoors and a safe distance from trees and other structures.
- Never leave the fryer unattended.
- Never operate in the rain or high winds.
Make sure your turkey is completely thawed. Water and ice can cause a flare-up and start a fire.
- Place your fryer on level concrete ground.
- Place the propane tanks at least 2 feet from the fryer.
- Do not over fill the fryer with oil. Oil will expand when it is heated.
- Bigger is not always better, choose a turkey that weighs less than 12 pounds. For the best results choose a turkey that weights 8-10 pounds.
- Turn off the burner before lowering the turkey into the oil to prevent flare-ups. Once the turkey is submerged in the oil you can turn the burner back on.
- Wear safety goggles and fire-resistant gloves when handling the fryer.
- Keep children and pets away from the frying area.
- Have a “ABC” or grease-rated fire extinguisher close by. Never use water to put out a grease fire.
- Let the oil cool overnight before disposing.
