Texas Insurance Requirements

Commercial vehicles over a certain gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) are governed by TxDOT for intrastate operations. Trucking operations that are interstate (crossing state lines) will be governed by the FMCSA and have different insurance requirements.

  • Texas Intrastate 26,000 lbs+ - $500,000 in auto liability
  • Interstate (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration)26,000 lbs+ - $750,000 in auto liability

Texas's $500,000 minimum is lower than what most hauling contracts actually require — $1,000,000 is the more common practical floor, and limits are available up to that level.

Understanding Coverage Options

Physical Damage - Comprehensive and collision coverage for the truck and permanently attached equipment.
Auto Liability - Combined Single Limit (CSL) of bodily injury and property damage at a Texas minimum of $500,000 if running intrastate If you are crossing state lines then the FMCSA will require $750,000
Medical Payments - at-fault or not at-fault accidents that require medical attention. Limits start at $2,000 and up to $10,000
Umbrella Policy - Additional auto liability for contracts that require over a million dollars in auto liability.
Inland Marine - If your business has equipment other than dump trucks you can insure this on an equipment floater policy. Example would be a skid steerer or track loaders
Workers Compensation - Medical payments and compensation for workers injured on the job

Physical Damage and inland marine is not a required coverage, but highly recommended for Texas dump truck operations. In the past decade we have seen an uptick in equipment stolen that has cost business owners thousands. This coverage is affordable compared to the cost to replace.

How much is Dump Truck Insurance?

Rates widely vary due to location. For example we insure a dump truck that is used strictly on a ranch. We were able to insure this rig as farm use for less than $5,000 per year. Most dump operations will see rates between $13,000 to $19,000.

 Frequently Asked Questions

I have a contract that requires to be listed as Additional Insured and needs a Waiver of Subrogation. What is this?
Additional Insured is an endorsement to the policy that says that if you are at-fault for an accident and the business that you are working for is pulled into the claim, your policy will be primary and that business is covered by that policy for the accident.
A Waiver of Subrogation is commonly used if your equipment is damaged and you are not at-fault. Your insurance company waives the right to pursue the person or company that caused the claim to recoup the damage.

Is telematics/dashcam required?
No, this is not a requirement for all insurance companies. If you do choose to use some of these technologies some discounts may apply. Some lesser known insurance companies will require these devices, so we will give you different options.

Does Texas require Cargo coverage for dump trucks?
No cargo coverage is required. Some contracts that you haul for may require cargo coverage for non-owned materials.

Do you insure a first year CDL?
Yes, we have programs for drivers that have just got the commercial drivers license (CDL). These costs are higher than drivers that have had a CDL for 2 or more years. We will constantly work with you to find cheaper insurance as you get more experience.
