I only have one employee do I need Workers’ Compensation Insurance?
Yes, in the construction industry one or more employee will require that you carry workers’ compensation insurance. Additionally, owners are considered employees in the construction industry. Failure to apply for a workers’ compensation exemption as an owner could result in non-compliance with the state, a stop work order, and fines.
What is a bid bond?
Securing a bid bond provides protection in the event your bid is accepted and you are unable to complete the job and accept as projected. It will pay the difference between your bid and the next highest bidder. For more information on contractor bonds, see our information page.
If I hire subcontractors does that affect my insurance?
It can have a large impact on your business. The first step is to make sure that your policy will cover subcontractors. From there you will need to verify the subcontractor has liability insurance equal to you. This can be done by requiring a certificate of insurance, preferably being listed as an additional insured. If they do not have coverage, then they are considered an uninsured subcontractor. As your sub, you are responsible for any damages caused by them, therefore you will need to include them on your policy. This will result in an additional cost to you, and can be rather high depending on the amount of their compensation. We always recommending consulting with your agent to make sure you are covered and to help minimize your cost.
