What is Garage Liability?

Garage Liability is a specific coverage form that was designed to provide coverage for businesses that have exposure to vehicles. The coverage can be divided into three areas, Auto, Other than Auto and the Aggregate

Auto - A normal General Liability policy has exclusions for auto, such as driving a customer's vehicle. Garage liability addresses the Auto portion by providing liability coverage to others in the event of an at-fault accident.

Other than Auto - This coverage is similar to General Liability and provides coverage for slip and falls that happen on your premises.

Aggregate - The Aggregate is the most the insurance company will payout in a policy term.

Ins and Outs of Garage Keepers Insurance

The most important insurance coverage for any business dealing with customers' vehicles is Garagekeepers Insurance. Garage Keepers Insurance provides coverage to vehicles while you are in the care, custody or control.

For example, while repairing a customer’s auto it accidentally falls off the lift. If you have the proper limits of coverage this would be covered by the insurance company minus the deductible.

What many people don’t realize about Garage Keepers Insurance is that there are 3 different forms of the coverage.

  1. Direct Primary - This form of garagekeepers provides coverage for customers' vehicles no matter what type of loss happens to the vehicle.
  2. Direct Excess - Says if you are not negligent for the loss, such as a tornado causing damage to the vehicle, then the customer’s insurance would payout first and any additional would be covered by the Direct Excess.
  3. Legal Liability - Is the most common form of garagekeepers and provides coverage only for things that happen to the vehicles that you are legally liable. For example, the customer’s vehicle falls off the lift.

Very impressed with Barbee Jackson and my agent Jennifer Ellis. I was up against a tight timeline to secure new liability insurance for my business and right in the middle of the holidays. Jennifer was able to secure me an excellent premium for the year and on time! She responded to emails swiftly with the info/paperwork I needed, no stalling or excuses.
