Florida works a reefer unit harder than almost any state: the loads are temperature-critical — citrus and produce out of Central Florida, seafood off the Gulf, dairy and pharmaceuticals through Miami and Tampa — and the climate attacks the equipment doing the work. High heat and humidity mean the unit runs constantly, urban crawls through Orlando, Jacksonville, and Miami add idle hours, and a breakdown on a July afternoon starts the spoilage clock immediately. Everything on our national reefer page applies here — this page is the Florida layer.
The Florida Factors
Heat is the underwriting story. A reefer unit in Florida cycles harder and ages faster — which collides with the unit-age limits and maintenance-record conditions that breakdown coverage commonly carries. Keep the service records; they’re claim evidence here more than anywhere.
Seasonal loads, seasonal values. Citrus and produce season concentrates high-value, highly perishable freight into months — if your cargo limit was set in the off-season, it may not match what’s actually in the box in January. We review limits against the season, not the average.
Port reefer work is its own lane. Pulling refrigerated containers out of Miami, Everglades, Jacksonville, or Tampa puts you under the UIIA on top of everything else — see our Florida UIIA page for what the gate requires.
The certificate pace. Florida produce moves on broker boards where the load goes to whoever’s compliant now — certificates within five minutes during normal business hours unless a change is required.
What Does It Cost in Florida?
Driven by commodity, season, lanes, driver records, and the age of your units — Florida’s heat load makes unit condition count double. Call us with your real numbers: (850) 389-2001.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does reefer breakdown coverage answer a Florida heat claim? If the unit fails mechanically, that’s the claim breakdown coverage exists for — subject to the form’s conditions (unit age, maintenance, pre-cooling). Heat makes failures more likely; it doesn’t change what’s covered. Know your form’s conditions before summer does.
I haul produce seasonally — can my coverage flex with the season? That’s a conversation worth having before the season: cargo limits and reported values should match what you’re actually hauling in-season. Call before the first citrus load, not after.
I pull reefer containers at the port — what else do I need? UIIA compliance on top of your regular program — $1M auto liability with the UIIE-1 endorsement and the limits your equipment providers set. Our Florida UIIA page walks the whole gate requirement.
How fast can I get a certificate of insurance? Within five minutes during normal business hours unless a change is required.
