Coverage Options
Commercial Auto Coverage and Liability - Coverage for your service truck plus auto liability
Garage Liability - Liability coverage that is split in two categories: Auto and Non-Auto. Auto would be for test drives for the vehicle that you are servicing and Non-auto would be for accidents like a slip and fall.
Garagekeepers - Coverage for your customers' vehicles while in your care, custody and control.
Inland Marine - covers tools and equipment used to service vehicles.
Workers Compensation - Covers medical and benefits in case an employee is injured on the job.
Garage Liability Insurance vs General Liability
What most agents get wrong is mistaking trying to quote a mechanic on a general liability policy. General liability has exclusions to the policy for auto related claims. General liability policies are typically used by businesses and contractors. It provides coverage for slip and falls and other accidents that can occur in the course of business.
Garage Liability policies are designed for dealerships and repair shops. The policy has no exclusion to auto liability. For example - you finished repairing a vehicle and you took it out for a test drive and accidentally hit another vehicle. The garage policy would pay for damages to the other party. On a general liability policy this would not be covered because it has an exclusion for auto related accidents.
Limits start as low as $30,000 and up to $1 million.
Garagekeepers
As previously described, Garagekeepers provides coverage for a non-owned vehicle in your care, custody and control. For example - while you are repairing the vehicle you accidentally scrape the vehicle causing damage to the paint. The garage liability would not pay for this damage but the garagekeepers policy would up to policy limits.
Limits start at $10,000 and up to $250,000

How much does the Policy Cost?
Basic policies can run as little as $900 per year for the most basic coverage and be put on a monthly payment plan.
💡Krystal’s Pro Tip - You might not think you need garage liability or garagekeepers insurance. But accidents do happen and you want to protect your business from litigation. We are happy to quote different coverage levels and options, so you can make a decision that best protects your business.
Frequently Asked Questions
I saw on another insurance agency's website that I can get general liability?
That is generally incorrect. Some insurance companies will endorse the general liability garage liability, but that is rare. Agencies that promote General Liability for repair shops and mobile mechanics do not have a full understanding of the exclusions to general liability and how garage liability for dealerships and garage is superior coverage for a less price.
I do marine repair, what is the most common limit required for marinas?
Harbor masters typically require a $1 million in liability. Some marinas will also require you to purchase a pollution liability policy. It is best practice to get their requirements before agreeing to work on someone's vessel.
I do service work for fleets, what are their insurance requirements?
We currently have a client that works on Fedex trucks for the required maintenance. They require $1 million in garage liability and $100,000 in garagekeepers. For any big operation this would be the standard coverage limits.
