Building Coverage

Most convenience store owners own their building and it is important that you have the proper coverage amount and coverage options. Accidents happen everyday and without the proper coverage you could be left with the bill.

C-Store Building Insurance – Insures the covered building. The property can be insured at Replacement Cost (RC) or Actual Cash Value (ACV). In most cases you want a policy that is Replacement Cost, meaning you get the value to rebuild the building at today’s cost without depreciation. An Actual Cash Value policy depreciates the building, meaning you get today’s cost to rebuild of a similar age and building type minus depreciation.

Business Personal Property – Covers the business property such as furnishings and equipment. This will also includes any inventory held for sale. An extra, but valuable coverage option to add to any Convenience Store Insurance policy is for Food Spoilage due to power loss. This extra coverage option could save you thousands, as we learned from the Hurricane Michael that struck Panama City in October of 2018.

Other Structures – Provides coverage for structures that are not permanently attached to the building. This could be a fence or another building on the same property. The most common Other Structure and most overlooked is the canopy.

Business Income – Provides loss of income for the business after a covered loss. This coverage includes lost profits and expenses during the time the business is closed or under reconstruction.

Signage – Signage can be expensive, so it is important to make sure that you check the policy limits when it comes to outside signs.

When it comes to insuring your building, you want to make sure you are covering the building for the full replacement value. All insurance policies come with a coinsurance clause. Coinsurance can prevent you from getting a full insurance payout in the event of a claim. It is important that you work with an agency that specializes in C-Store Insurance and know how to properly cover your building.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my policy include Liquor Liability and why do I need it?

When you sell alcoholic beverages, you risk selling to an underage individual or an intoxicated person. Liquor Liability would protect your business in case you are held liable for property damage or injuries caused by an intoxicated person that purchased alcohol at your store. Unfair…YES, but don’t wait until an unfair claim happens to find out if you have the proper coverage.

The BIG question…Does my current agent understand my business?

Nine out of ten times the answers is NO. Most retail agencies have little experience or training working with C-Store operations. This means they may be missing valuable coverage’s you need. Like always, it’s best to consult with an agency that specializes in commercial insurance. At Barbee Jackson Insurance this is all we do, and we are the experts when it comes to C-Store Insurance.
