There are four key points to consider and discuss when looking at your policy or purchasing a new one if you are just starting out. These tips will help ensure you are truly getting the right Alabama semi truck insurance at the right price.

The four key points are:

  1. A quality, established carrier with a proven claims record
  2. The policy is designed with you in mind
  3. You know the coverage you have and do not feel it is too much or too little
  4. You are confident that if you need something your company/agent will be there for you.

1. Quality Insurance Carrier

This is the first point because it is the most important in my opinion. Even if the rest all line up, if the insurance company is not going to be there to pay the claim when you need them most, they are no good! I recommend doing research on the insurance company offered to you on the quote. The first step is to review the insurance companies financial strength. This means their ability to pay claims and financial sturdiness to be around for the long haul. A great place to start is by going to the premier rating company AM Best and search their credit rating. You are looking for a company who has a B+ rating or better. It is just like when you were in school A++ is the best but a B+ is really good too!

2. The Policy is Designed With You in Mind

I know this sounds very cliche but it is true. A policy that is generic in nature may be costing you money on coverage that does not even apply to your business. Transversely, if that same generic policy was not discussed with you, there may be significant gaps in coverage. You will know if this is a custom policy for you if the agent has discussed the coverage with you in detail. Conveniently, this leads into the third point.

3. You Know The Coverage You Have…

Have you ever looked at your policy and thought, “I have no clue what I am paying for”, if so then it is definitely time to do an insurance review. It is the responsibility of the agent to know the coverage and best advise, however, if your agent either hasn’t done that or kept you in the loop than you may be paying for something you don’t need. Alternately, it can leave you with significant gaps in coverage. Either way can be very costly to you. Ask your agent to explain the coverages on your policy, question why you have it if you are unsure. Ask about the benefit or repercussions of removing or reducing the coverage. Finally, ask what you may be missing. Is there a coverage that they recommend and why. This will leave the decision to purchase up to you but most importantly, you will know exactly what you have.

4. Competent Insurance Agent and Company

If you read the last paragraph and your agent has not explained or discussed coverage, then it may be time to look for a new agent. When choosing an insurance agent you need someone who is knowledgeable and can discuss the coverage with you. They may not have all the answers, but are willing to do the research to get you what you need. They are happy to explain and discuss your policy, and also discuss the company they have placed you with.

Another aspect to consider is the level of service. Do they return your calls in a timely manner? Do they issue certificates of insurance immediately or do they cost you money for failure to send them? An agent and agency who is experienced and focused on providing you with the highest level of service will be there for you when you need them most.
