Getting ready to build your dream home in Florida? Let me share the two real-world choices that saved me thousands on my homeowners insurance.
I’ve been a licensed insurance agent in Florida for over 20 years. I just finished building my own dream home and have insured thousands of Builders Risk projects that later converted to standard homeowners policies. There are two key design features that can save you thousands once construction is complete.

“We bought a Builder's Risk Insurance policy for our new home under construction. Service and pricing were both 'best in class.' Rose Williams was very easy to work with — responsive, great explanations, and quick to refund our unused premium when our home finished early.” — David Altimont
#1 – Hip Roof vs Gable Roof
Florida is known for extreme weather — hurricanes, tropical storms, and high winds. When it comes to roof design, a hip roof can save you hundreds (sometimes thousands) on your homeowners insurance once the home is complete.
Why? When strong winds hit, a hip roof’s pyramid-style design allows wind to flow smoothly over and around the structure instead of catching on flat gable ends. This dramatically reduces uplift and damage risk, leading to fewer claims and bigger insurance discounts.
Tip: You can still include some gable features for architectural appeal, but try to keep them under 20% (ideally 80% hip / 20% gable).

“Rose at Barbee Jackson Insurance was very knowledgeable and patient while reviewing my options for a Builders Risk Policy. I highly recommend Barbee Jackson Insurance for all your coverage needs.” — Danny Perez
#2 – Brick Veneer or Hardie Board Siding
Wind-driven rain and debris are common in Florida. Traditional wood and vinyl siding often fail in major storms. Insurance companies reward homes with more durable exterior materials:
- Brick veneer — Many carriers give significant discounts for homes with 50% or more brick.
- Hardie Board (fiber cement) — A popular low-maintenance option in Florida that performs extremely well in extreme weather and also qualifies for discounts.
Both options work great on frame-built homes. Homes built with concrete block typically receive the highest construction grade discounts.
Choosing both a hip roof and brick or Hardie Board siding can save you thousands per year on homeowners insurance. Even better, these features help prevent claims, which means lower deductibles and far less hassle after a storm.
