Understanding Restaurant Insurance Coverages – Restaurant Liability Insurance
General Liability – Lawsuits are costly and that is why every business like yours needs General Liability Insurance. It protects your business from a lawsuit resulting from an injury sustained in your restaurant or parking lot. It will help cover cost such as lawyer bills and extensive medical bills that you may be held liable for as a result of an accident.
Product Liability – If a customer becomes sick as a result of the food that you prepared and served you may be held liable and responsible for medical costs and lawyer fees.
Liquor Liability – Did you know you can be held liable for accidents caused by your patron as result of the alcoholic beverages you served? Also depending on the insurance carrier, it may not be included as part of the Restaurant Insurance Package. If you serve any kind of alcoholic beverage you must protect your business with Liquor Liability.
Hired and Non-Owned Auto Liability – In the course of running your restaurant business you may ask an employee to deliver a bank deposit, go to the store, or deliver food to a customer. If you don’t have the right coverage you might open yourself to a lawsuit as a result of an auto accident caused by your employee preforming work on behalf of the restaurant. Hired and Non-Owned provides liability insurance for you in the event an employee, using their own vehicle, causes and automobile accident while working for the business.
Workers Compensation Insurance – If an employee is injured on the job you may be held liable for that injury. Workers Comp provides your employees coverage in the event of an accident or illness while on the job.
Employment Practices Liability Insurance (EPLI) – EPLI provides restaurant owners coverage against claims made by employees for discrimination for age, sex, color or disability, wrongful termination, harassment, and other employment related issues.
Understanding Restaurant Insurance Coverages – Restaurant Property Coverage
Building – Provides coverage for the building. The property can be insured at Replacement Cost (RC) or Actual Cash Value (ACV). In most cases you want a policy that is Replacement Cost, meaning you get the cost to rebuild the building at today’s prices without depreciation. An Actual Cash Value policy depreciates the building, meaning you get today’s cost to rebuild of a similar age and building type minus depreciation.
Business Personal Property – Covers the business property such as furnishings and equipment.
Restaurant Equipment Breakdown – Protects restaurant equipment for losses resulting from a power surge, mechanical breakdown or operator error.
Inventory – Provides coverage for your inventory and can include an adjustment for peak season.
Other Structures – Provides coverage for structures that are not permanently attached to the building. This could be a fence or another building on the same property.
Business Income – Provides loss of income for your restaurant after a covered loss. This coverage includes lost profits and expenses during the time the business is closed or under reconstruction.
Signage – Signage can be expensive, so it is important to make sure that you check the policy limits when it comes to outside signs.
